Subrata Roy, the visionary founder of Sahara Group, passed away in Mumbai at the age of 75 after battling a prolonged illness. He was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Medical Research Institute on Sunday due to deteriorating health.
The Sahara India Pariwar expressed deep sadness, stating, “It is with profound sadness that Sahara India Pariwar informs the demise of our Hon’ble ‘Saharasri’ Subrata Roy Sahara.” He succumbed to cardiorespiratory arrest on November 14, 2023, at 10:30 pm, following complications arising from metastatic malignancy, hypertension, and diabetes.
Born on June 10, 1948, in Bihar’s Araria, Subrata Roy built an expansive empire spanning finance, real estate, media, and hospitality. After completing his degree in mechanical engineering from the Government Technical Institute in Gorakhpur, he entered the business world in Gorakhpur and took over Sahara Finance in 1976. By 1978, he transformed it into Sahara India Pariwar, one of India’s largest conglomerates. The group ventured into media with Rashtriya Sahara, a Hindi language newspaper, in 1992 and later expanded into television with Sahara TV, later renamed Sahara One.
The Sahara India Pariwar expressed deep sorrow over his loss, describing him as a guiding force and a source of inspiration for those privileged to work alongside him.
In 2014, Subrata Roy faced legal troubles when the Supreme Court of India ordered his detention for failing to appear in court regarding a dispute with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). This led to a prolonged legal battle, resulting in his incarceration in Tihar Jail. He was eventually released on parole.
Akhilesh Yadav, chief of the Samajwadi Party, expressed his condolences, describing Subrata Roy as a successful businessman with a big heart who provided support to countless people.
Subrata Roy is survived by his wife, son, and brother.
